The newest pending legislation before U.S. Congress, and how it could affect domainers and the internet at large.
Much has happened since the broad language of the Snowe Bill threatened to change the shape of internet commerce a couple of years ago. While the expiration of the JPA between ICANN and the U.S. Department of Commerce changed the relationship of American authority over the administration of the global internet, the recently introduced S. 3804 (Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act) could adversely affect international internet commerce by skewing the lines of legal jurisdiction, and undermining not only ICANN, but the DNS system as it functions today. Domainer’s Magazine talked to Phillip Corwin, of Internet Commerce Association, to learn more about this legislation, and why domainers should be concerned.
