I have recently purchased the new Droid X and was amazed at the blazing speed of the apps. The phone itself is a “handful” with it’s 4.3-inch 854x480 screen size, making it a very large phone by today’s standards, but you will forget about its size when you see how great the screen looks. I am not a fan of the touchscreen phones. However, the X made me a believer. One of my biggest concerns was the keyboard, but with its new (built in) “swipe” app, touchscreen typing is a breeze.
It boasts a talk time of 480 minutes and a standby time of 220 hours. I can’t honestly say that I’ve left the phone alone for nearly 10 days so that I could test that last spec, but after 8 hours of heavy use (480 minutes, that is) my X was still loading webpages and dialing numbers. So the phone is beautiful, but a lot of what brought me into the fold with Google’s Android OS has been the massive list of useful apps that can go with it. These programs aren’t limited to the Droid X, of course, but if you can get your hands on one, the phone runs all of the follwing really well: Google GogglesOne of the most innovative apps available for the Droid X is Google’s own Google Goggles. Google Goggles, a free download in the Android Market, lets you get information about objects simply by pointing your phone at them. It can recognize landmarks, logos, artwork, businesses, and all sorts of different products. ShopSavvyFor on-the-fly product comparisons, the ShopSavvy Android app is tough to beat. Kindle for AndroidGet all of your downloaded books sent to your Droid X so you can read on the go. How can you not? It’s free! Craigslist CheckerIf you’re a Craigslist junkie — getting everything from new gadgets to jobs on the site — then you need CraigslistChecker, which can keep you within an arms-length of your feed so you can hop on those deals with quickness. LookoutThis one’s a lifesaver, especially if you’re accident prone. It has a host of measures to keep “on the lookout” for dangers to your phone, even when the user is...well, less than careful. |
